During a week's holiday with our whole family (six adults, three kids) on the Baltic island of Öland in July 2023, I managed to get away for two half day cycling trips which covered the whole length of the island. <iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m14!1m12!1m3!1d570242.4179054865!2d16.551734214475463!3d56.8108119630728!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sse!4v1689411037916!5m2!1sen!2sse" width="600" height="450" style="border:0;" allowfullscreen="" loading="lazy" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade"></iframe> The first leg was from the lighthouse (Sweden's highest) at the southern tip of the island, back to our holiday place - 80kms in all. I started on the east side, then crossed the desolate moor Alvaret to the west coast and up. ![[olandsouth-1.jpeg]] ![[olandsouth-2.jpeg]] ![[olandsouth-3.jpeg]] The ride was marked by two punctures. I thought I had found the offending splinter, but two mornings later I found the tyre flat again and had to buy a new inner tub, and (for security) a new tyre. This enabled me to do the second leg, from the lighthouse at the north most point of the island back to our house - 98kms altogether. This took me along the particularly beautiful north west coast of Öland, desolate in places but always interesting, as well as inland through forest and meadows. ![[olandnorth-1.jpeg]] ![[olandnorth-2.jpeg]] ![[olandnorth-3.jpeg]] ![[olandnorth-4.jpeg]] This second leg was mainly cycling into a powerful headwind which made me thankful for being on an electric bike. I managed my power consumption carefully to reach home having exhausted both my batteries. I would recommend Öland for cycling, but think that the island tourist board could make more effort to ensure that signposting for this recognised cycle route (Ölandsleden) is accurate and complete. I took wrong turns a few times due to inadequate information.
