I love long-distance cycling, having done End2End of Britain in 2002, and since moving to Sweden both Dalslandsleden and Ölandsleden. I must admit that at my advanced age having an electric bike makes possible what would otherwise be beyond me.
This week I managed Kattegattleden - a 400 km cycle trail from Helsingborg to Gothenburg. By road it is about 250 kms, but the cycle trail hugs the coast and brings alive all kinds of scenery which you miss on the motorway. The map below shows you the three days I did. At the top of the map is the island of Tjörn where I live, and at the bottom is Copenhagen.

The early part of the journey takes one through some historical places with wonderful buildings

and terrific views across sweeping bays.
![[kattegattleden-03.jpeg]]
There is some unusual architecture...
![[kattegattleden-04.jpeg]]
And some extraordinary fields....
![[kattegattleden-05.jpeg]]
You are never far from the sea...
![[kattegattleden-06.jpeg]]
![[kattegattleden-07.jpeg]]
Nor from the forests....
![[kattegattleden-08.jpeg]]
Nor the open spaces....

You pass through some large urban areas including Halmstad with its historic old streets...
![[kattegattleden-10.jpeg]]
Falkenberg, Kungsbacka and Varberg, with its wonderful seafront and old fort:

Plenty of sandy beaches

And less sandy ones, one of which tempted me into a quick dip:

I passed this old weir with pounding surf. If you look carefully you can see a fish in midair attempting to go upstream.

North of Varberg the coastline changes, islands appear, the terrain is more rocky. You can feel Bohuslän approaching. As you approach Gothenburg you pass bay after bay:

Finally, Gothenburg central station! My rear end is raw, my wrists are aching, my legs are a little tired, but my spirit is filled.
