*26 August 2025*
After three nights in Alta, today we started our journey west and south towards Tromsø, Senja and Lofoten. For those who like maps, you can see near the left edge the city of Tromsø which we will visit tomorrow, and toward the right edge the E45, on which we drove north via the village of Masi which we wrote about briefly. (Extraordinary fact: the E45 is 'Inlandsvägen' - the Inland Road - which runs all the way down Sweden and past our daughter Karin at Vargön, and via Lilla Edet to Gothenburg!)

The road today is the E6 which also runs down to Gothenburg, via Oslo, and continues to Copenhagen. But up here it is a quiet thoroughfare, in good condition, which mainly hugs the shoreline of the fjords which press into the mainland.

The weather sadly was overcast, but no rain. We enjoyed the views all the way but relished them more as they got closer to the Lyngen peninsula where we are staying overnight.

This area is renowned for its dramatic natural beauty and unspoiled Arctic landscapes. Dominated by the jagged Lyngen Alps, the region offers towering peaks, deep fjords, and pristine glaciers (141 in all). It is home to Jiehkkevárri (1,834 m), the highest mountain in Troms County, but has about 123 other peaks over 1,000 meters in elevation.
We took our first of what are likely to be many ferries, from Olderdalen to Lyngseidet - to save over 100km of driving around the two big fjords which jut in on either side of Lyngen.

From the sea there was a good (albeit dark) view of two glaciers.

The road from Lyngseidet across the peninsula to Svensby (from where we will catch a ferry in the morning) is beautiful, hugging the side of another fjord which comes in from the west.

We reached our campsite with the sun partially succeeding in its afternoon efforts to break through the clouds.

And it was a stunning evening!
